Fürsteneck Castle
Fürsteneck Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle south of the Rench on a 278-meter-high mountain spur at the exit of the Bottenau Valley near the districts of Butschbach and Bottenau in the municipality of Oberkirch in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was built at the end of the 12th century by the Counts of Zähringen, mentioned as "castrum" in 1225, and in 1286 Friedrich and Egino Fürstenberg, ministerials of King Rudolf I, became lords of the castle. Later, the castle came into the possession of the Diocese of Strasbourg. Around 1635, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed.
Of the former castle complex, which included a large oval courtyard with a residential tower and two outbuildings, a cistern shaft, and a curtain wall, only the foundation walls remain.
