Frauenstein Castle
Frauenstein Castle is a vanished rock castle on a dolomite rock, the "Frauenstein Cliff", between the village of Scharzfeld and the town of Bad Lauterberg im Harz in the district of Osterode am Harz (Lower Saxony).
Frauenstein Castle served as an observation post on the strategically favorable rock as an additional safeguard for Scharzfels Castle, located about 300 meters to the southwest. During the Thirty Years' War, the Frauenstein Cliff, encompassing the entire summit on a base area of about 25 by 30 meters, was expanded into a fortress. In the Seven Years' War, Scharzfels Castle capitulated in 1761, and Frauenstein Castle was blown up by French troops.
The present castle site only shows remnants of the moat, the rampart, and parts of the castle cellar.
