Frauenburg Castle
The Frauenburg is the ruin of a medieval spur castle south of Sonnenberg-Winnenberg and Frauenberg in the district of Birkenfeld in Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle stands on a narrow mountain spur not far from the Nahe river. The mountain spur is formed by the Aubach and Ellenbach streams.
The Frauenburg was built before 1327 by the Counts of Sponheim and belonged to the rear county. From 1331, it served as the dower house for Countess Loretta of Sponheim after she had handed over the government affairs to her son Johann III. The Frauenburg later became the official residence of a Sponheim bailiff. The castle was destroyed in 1673 during the so-called Wildfangfehde by Lorraine troops. The Frauenburg is not identical to the castle near Birkenfeld built in 1328 by Baldwin of Luxembourg.

The castle has a rectangular floor plan. Round towers are located at the corners and on the northeastern long side. The tower on the long side protected the former entrance. The round towers on the attack side are still preserved almost at their full height, with a neck ditch in front of them. Maintenance and renovation work, some of which deviates from the original structure, was completed in 1988. In 2013, extensive restoration to preserve the building fabric began, which is expected to be completed by 2014.
