Falkenstein Castle
Falkenstein Castle is the ruin of a high medieval spur castle near Waldhof-Falkenstein on the Our in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The castle is located on a steep 350 m above sea level high mountain spur above the Our valley in the German-Luxembourg Nature Park (nature reserve "Ourschleife-Falkenstein") and can be reached via a narrow rock path.
The castle was probably built in the first half of the 12th century by the noble lords of Falkenstein and later expanded by the Counts of Manderscheid. The main castle and the castle chapel date from the 12th to 14th centuries. In 1679 the castle was destroyed, later rebuilt.
Falkenstein Castle, belonging to the Duchy of Luxembourg until the end of the 18th century, was owned by the French-Luxembourg family de la Gardelle von Falkenstein (de Fauconpierre) until the death of its last inhabitant, Anna-Maria de la Gardelle von Falkenstein, daughter of Adam Heinrich de la Gardelle von Falkenstein.
The castle passed to Prussia in 1815, and in 1886 the castle was sold to a private individual and the residential building was expanded. Today, the ruin with residential house and chapel remains in private ownership and is inhabited.

Of the former castle complex, the castle gate, parts of the shield wall, a wall of the palas, parts of the zwinger, a defensive tower, vaulted passages, the chapel and remnants of the walls of the stables and the servants' quarters are still preserved.
