Drisht Castle (Kalaja e Drishtit)
The Drisht Castle Ruin, also known as Kalaja e Drishtit, perches on a hill near the village of the same name in the Shkodra region of Albania. This historic site bears witness to eventful epochs and today offers a fascinating glimpse into past defensive architecture.
History+
The origins of the Drisht fortification date back to the late Neolithic period. In the 9th century, the castle was an important part of the defense lines of the Zeta Principality. Under Byzantine rule, the complex was expanded in the 13th century. Between 1396 and 1478, during Venetian control, the castle underwent further development. In 1442, it briefly fell to the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković. After a prolonged siege in 1478, the Ottomans finally took control of Drisht.
