Dippach Castle
The ruin of Dippach Castle is located on the edge of the village of Dippach, a district of the municipality of Maroldsweisach in the Haßberge district in Lower Franconia. Of the small former moated castle, the gate tower and the surrounding walls are still preserved today.
The small castle originally belonged to the Counts of Henneberg, then to the Saxon Wettins. The Redwitz and Fuchs von Schweinshaupten families are mentioned as vassals. In 1665, the von Russwurm family acquired the complex, which was sold on to the Lords of Hutten zu Birkenfeld in 1725. At the beginning of the 18th century, the manor is said to have still been in good condition.
Description+
The ruin is a good example of one of the formerly numerous, rather modest seats of the lower nobility in Franconia. In fact, the complex was more of a lightly fortified farmstead that would not have withstood a serious attack for long.
The rectangular surrounding walls (25 x 32 meters) are still preserved up to six meters high. On this plinth, which has neither window openings nor loopholes, there were probably formerly upper floors made of wood or half-timbering. The castle was formerly surrounded at some distance by a moat, of which only a few traces can now be found.
Access was provided by an approximately 12-meter-high, barrel-vaulted gate tower. On the inside, there is a rectangular access opening above the passage, and on the outside, the former schoolhouse is attached. The rectangular openings interpreted as loopholes in the inventory volume were probably more for lighting.
Of the interior buildings, only remnants of walls, beginnings of partition walls, and beam holes have been preserved.
