Dill Castle
Dill Castle is the ruin of a spur castle on a mountain spur above the Dillerbach in the municipality of Dill in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The castle was presumably built in the 11th century on the remains of a Roman or Celtic predecessor complex. The founder of the regional castle was probably Albert von Dill, Count of Mörsberg (County of Sponheim).
According to a contract from 1130 between Meginhard von Sponheim and his wife Mechthild von Mörsberg on the one hand, and the Archbishop of Mainz Adalbert I von Saarbrücken on the other, the legitimate possession of Dill Castle was linked to the patronage of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Pfaffen-Schwabenheim.
During the Palatinate War of Succession, Dill Castle was destroyed in 1697 by a French army under General Melac, although the village itself was spared.
Restoration work on the castle ruin took place from 1966 to 1967 and in 1970.

At the highest point of the castle complex in the north is the upper castle, situated above the bailey. Of the 19-meter-high rectangular, four-story residential building, with an edge length of 18 by 12 meters, three side walls are still present; the east wall is missing. On the outside of the north wall is a latrine bay. Parts of the barrel-vaulted cellars are also still accessible. In the west of the core castle, remains of the curtain wall have been uncovered.
They show masonry in a herringbone pattern. On the area of the eastern lower castle stand the Protestant church, built on the site of the former castle chapel, a well house converted into a holiday home, and a modern residential building.
Of the western and southern bailey, only remains of the foundations and enclosing walls are still present; the area is partly used as a garden.
The castle is privately owned. However, public tours take place once or twice a year. The dates are published in the official gazette or at www.arrata.de.
