Diepoldsburg Castle
The Diepoldsburg ruin is a double castle, consisting of the Upper Diepoldsburg and the Lower Diepoldsburg, also known as Rauber Castle. It is located near the Unterlenningen district (Brucken sub-district) of the municipality of Lenningen in the Esslingen district in Baden-Württemberg. The rock castle is situated above the Lautertal valley on a 780 m above sea level high rock ridge.
The castle is said to have been built by the Knights of Diepholdsburg around 1210; a "Ulrich de Diepoltsburc" is mentioned as owner in a document from 1215. In the 16th century, the castle fell into disrepair, and from 1964 to 1965, the enclosing walls were restored. The castle received its second name, Rauber, due to its use as a robber baron's castle.
Upper Diepoldsburg+
The Upper Diepoldsburg complex stretches along a rock ridge for a total length of 165 meters; almost nothing remains of its two outer bailey. Of the almost square core castle, protected by a neck ditch, the 8-meter-high shield wall has been partially rebuilt.
