Devín Castle
The castle ruin of Devín, also known as Theben, majestically crowns a rock massif in Bratislava, Slovakia. This historic fortress, situated at the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers, is not only an impressive testament to bygone eras but also a significant national symbol for Slovakia.
History+
The strategically favorable location of the castle rock was already important in pre-Christian times and served as a Roman border post in the first centuries AD. The first documented mention of the castle as “Dowina” occurred in 864 in the Fulda Annals, at which time it comprised a princely castle with a church, burial site, and defensive ramparts. After the end of the Great Moravian Empire, Devín became part of Hungary and from the 15th century belonged to various Hungarian noble families. A pivotal event was the blowing up of the fortress by Napoleonic troops in 1809. In 1961, the castle ruin was declared a national monument and subsequently developed into an open-air museum.
