Cetin Castle
The castle ruin of Cetin, a historical fortress, rises in the municipality of Cetingrad in Croatia. It is a significant testament to medieval history and the scene of important political decisions.
History+
In the Middle Ages, Cetin was owned by the influential Croatian noble family of the Frankopans. A prominent representative was Ivan Frankopan Cetinski, who lost his life in 1493 in the Battle of Krbava Field. His son, Franjo Frankopan, later held high ecclesiastical offices as Archbishop of Kalocsa-Kecskemét and Bishop of Eger. A decisive event took place on January 1, 1527, when the Croatian Parliament, the Sabor, elected Ferdinand I of Habsburg as the Croatian king in Cetin. From the 16th to the 19th century, the castle was part of the Military Frontier and suffered considerable damage during the Ottoman Wars. In the 19th century, Cetin was eventually abandoned by its inhabitants, and the administration was moved to the nearby Cetingrad.
