Burkheim Castle

Burkheim Castle, also known as New Castle or Schwendi Castle, is the ruin of a spur castle at 200 m above sea level on a steep rock southwest of the Burkheim district of the municipality of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was first mentioned on January 13, 1231. Owners included the Margraves of Hachberg and in 1316 the Lords of Üsenberg, in 1561 Lazarus von Schwendi and the Bastian family. After destructions and reconstructions, the castle was finally destroyed between 1672 and 1676 in the Franco-Dutch War. Remains of the new building and parts of the defensive wall of the former castle complex are preserved and are owned by a winery.
