Bosselstein Castle
Bosselstein Castle, also known as Stein Castle or Old Castle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle above the upper district of Oberstein in Idar-Oberstein in the Birkenfeld district of the Hunsrück.
The castle is located on the Kirchenfelsen (Church Rock), a rugged rock reef above the Felsenkirche (Rock Church) of Idar-Oberstein, above the Nahe valley and next to Oberstein Castle.
Bosselstein Castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Stein (Oberstein) and was first mentioned in a document in 1197. From 1600 onwards, the castle was no longer inhabited, fell into disrepair, and became a ruin in 1945, coming under the ownership of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Preserved parts of the castle complex include the stump of the round keep and remains of the palas and the curtain wall.
