Bohlingen Castle

Bohlingen Castle, also known as the Fortress on the Burghalde and later Baltzbronn Castle, is the ruin of a spur castle in the Bohlingen district of the city of Singen in the Konstanz district of Baden-Württemberg. The castle is located on a plateau in a spur position in the center of Bohlingen "Am runden Turm" (At the Round Tower) near the current parish church of St. Pankratius.
From 1175 until the 14th century, the Bohlingen estate was the seat of local nobility as episcopal ministerials, in the middle of the 14th century it was owned by the Lords of Homburg, and in 1455 a "vesty by der Kilchen" (fortress by the church) was first mentioned. From 1455, the castle was owned by Salem Abbey, then by the Counts of Sulz, and in 1497 Konstanz Abbey reacquired the castle and lordship.
In 1512, the castle was mentioned as "Baltzbronn Castle," and in 1535, a new building was mentioned as the "New House." The castle was destroyed in 1640 during the Thirty Years' War by Konrad Widerholt, and in 1687, permission for demolition was granted for a church construction. At the beginning of the 19th century, a rectangular tower on the east side of the castle complex was demolished, and in 1990, a new building was erected north of the tower on the site of an older building.
Architectural Description+
Of the former castle complex on a castle hill area of 75 by 30 meters, the three-story, round keep, presumably dating from the 15th century, is still preserved. It has a diameter of ten meters and a wall thickness of two meters. The tower has a conical roof and a pointed-arch high entrance with the coat of arms of Count Alwig von Sulz. The palas of the castle is said to have stood on the site of the present parish church of St. Pankratius.
Visiting the tower, the outer grounds, and the castle courtyard is possible at any time.
