Berneck Castle

The Berneck ruin, also known as Tischneck ruin, is the ruin of a spur castle at 620 m above sea level in the Berneck valley northeast of Tennenbronn in the Rottweil district of Baden-Württemberg. It stands on a wooded rock opposite the so-called "Teufelsküche" (Devil's Kitchen).

Little is known about the history of the castle. It is only known that it was owned by the Lords of Falkenstein and Ramstein.

The castle is surrounded by a moat up to three meters deep. Remains of the former residential tower and some wall sections of unclear significance are preserved. On one of the ashlar stones, there is a stonemason's mark that can also be found on the Ramstein ruin. It was possibly the same stonemason and a construction period in the same timeframe. Since bossed ashlar stones without clamp holes were used, a construction period before the year 1230 is assumed.

Between 1960 and 1963, excavations were carried out at the ruin, during which, among other things, cup tiles were found, dating to the period between 1250 and 1275. Since the entire find layer was covered by a layer of ash, it can be assumed that the complex was destroyed by fire.
