Bachsfall Castle

Settlement traces from the Early Bronze and Iron Ages were found on the strategically located spur above the Gainfeld waterfall. The medieval castle complex possibly formed the seat of the powerful Burgraves of Pongau. The special position of the Lords of Pongowe is indicated by the fact that they already appeared in the early 12th century with a retinue of knightly vassals and possessed an extraordinarily widespread estate.

Previously, the hill sloping steeply to the north and east was called "Burgberg" (Castle Hill); the name "Bachsfall" (Stream Fall) has only been in use since the 19th century. The visible wall remains today were uncovered and conserved in 1982 on behalf of the market town of Bischofshofen.
