Gründung und frühe Jahre
Auenstein Castle was probably built around 1200 by the Frauenchiemsee Monastery. In the 13th century, it was owned by the Bishop of Brixen and administered by burgraves. Among them was Count Ulrich von Ulten, who in the year of his death, 1248, sold the usage rights to Emperor Frederick II. This led to a conflict between Bishop Bruno and almost all the landlords of the region.
Verfall
After the Lords of Auenstein took over the castle, they moved their seat to Peterberg and the castle was left to decay.
