Apenburg Castle
Apenburg Castle, also known as Groß Apenburg or Alte Burg, is the ruin of a lowland castle (marsh castle) 70 meters south of the village of Apenburg in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt.
The construction of the first castle complex, Burg Apenborch, must have been built around the year 1000 and was located about 100 meters further west. It belonged to the noble family of Apenborch and was destroyed in 1343 along with the settlement.
Apenburg Castle is the second castle complex, which was built to secure the Purnitz Pass for Salzwedel–Gardelegen or Braunschweig–Osterburg.
The castle was built in the 13th century at about the same time as the town was founded, and in 1351 Margrave Ludwig enfeoffed the von der Schulenburg family with the castle and town. The construction of the castle was completed in 1363. The town received fortifications consisting of a rampart, moat, and two gates, which, however, had already disappeared by the end of the Middle Ages. From 1648, the castle fell into disrepair.

The castle, built on an artificial hill in a marshy area and protected by a moat and rampart, was surrounded by a 6-meter-high wall, using remains (broken bricks) of the earlier castle and church.
In addition to the keep, the castle had a 25-meter-long three-story palas on the east side, a battlement on the south side, and outbuildings on the west side, as well as a gatehouse on the north side.
In 1572 the castle was renovated and in 1584 the keep was rebuilt, reducing the footprint to its current extent. The keep was raised from its original height of 11 meters to its current height of 25 meters and provided with battlements and a turret roof.
Of the former castle complex, the keep, the gate, and the surrounding walls are still preserved.
