Altmannstein Castle

Altmannstein Castle is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle on a 435 m above sea level high mountain northeast of the market town of Altmannstein in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt.

The first rulers of the then still unnamed place, the Lords of Stein, were first mentioned in a document in 1120. When the Lords of Stein died out in 1232, Altmannstein came into the possession of Altmann II of Abensberg, a relative of the Lords of Stein. He had the castle built. In 1291, Duke Ludwig the Strict of Bavaria acquired the castle from Ulrich II. In 1340, the castle was sold on to Konrad and Heinrich von Hautzendorf. Since the Counts of Abensberg acquired the right of pledge in 1374, the castle came back into their possession. But Nuremberg troops conquered the castle in 1446 because the lord of the castle, Johann von Abensberg, had contacts with robber knights, and such were also present in the fortress. In 1485, Niklas von Abensberg and Altmannstein, the last Babone, was attacked by Duke Christoph, and Seitz der Frauenberger killed the Babone.

In 1911, a residential building and outbuildings were erected on part of the destroyed castle area. Since 1991, the municipality of Altmannstein has owned the castle.
