Altlengbach Castle

The castle was built around 1400 on an artificial mound. Its builders are presumed to be the Fallbacher of Loosdorf.

Apollonia, from the family of the Schenken von Sebarn, received Altlengbach from her first husband, Mert von Fallbach. She left the property to her siblings. Later, the dominion came to Ulrich Eyczinger and then in 1457, as an already "desolate fortress," to Erhard Doss. From the 15th to the 17th century, the owners changed every few years, but the castle must have been restored and baroque-styled during this time. From 1672, Altlengbach belonged to Neulengbach. In 1683, the castle was destroyed by Turkish raiders and was not rebuilt thereafter.

When the Princes of Liechtenstein sold Neulengbach in 1920, they kept Altlengbach. The Altlengbach castle ruin is often referred to as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Lengenbach. However, this is incorrect, as this family had their castle in Altlengbach, but in the center directly next to the parish church. Furthermore, the Lengenbachers had already moved to Neulengbach in 1192. Their seat in Altlengbach was converted into a fortified rectory in the late Gothic period. When Altlengbach was built, the Lengenbachers had already been extinct for 160 years.
