Aichelberg Castle
The castle ruin Aichelberg (also Eichelberg) is located in the Ossiacher Tauern northeast of the municipality of Wernberg in the Austrian province of Carinthia.
The well-preserved complex, mainly dating from the 16th century in its current form, is located near Roman trade routes. Originally, it was a late Romanesque fortification. In the war between Emperor Frederick III and the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, the castle was destroyed in 1484 and rebuilt in its current form at the end of the 15th century. A depiction by Valvasor shows that the castle was already in decay around 1688.
The Eychelburg family is documented since 1224. Their castle passed into the possession of the Khevenhüller in 1431, who carried out extensions and reconstruction. In 1629, however, it was sold by the Protestant Khevenhüller, who emigrated, to Hans Siegmund Graf von Wagensberg. Over time, the property passed to the Orsini-Rosenberg family.
Complex+
Of the extensive complex, the four-story residential building with large windows and the three-story gatehouse wing with a projecting round tower are still well preserved. The keep was demolished in the 16th century. A walled courtyard is located in front of the complex to the south.
