Aach Castle
The castle ruin Alter Turm (Old Tower) is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the edge of the Eigeltingen Valley on a 35 by 30 meter plateau at 539 m above sea level, about 650 meters northeast of the town of Aach in the district of Konstanz (Baden-Württemberg).
A C14 dating of a charcoal piece from the infill masonry revealed a construction date in the first quarter of the 11th century, making it one of the oldest castles in the Hegau region.
In the year 1100, an Odalricus de Ake is listed as the 13th witness in a document by Burkard von Nellenburg. This noble family of Aach, free of feudal lords, is presumably the builder of the tower. From 1158 onwards, the Alter Turm was owned by the Prince-Bishopric of Constance.
Description+
The southern edge slopes steeply down to the Eigeltingen Valley, while the remaining three sides are protected by a three-meter-deep ditch cut into the rock. Rubble walls of the enceinte follow the edge of the plateau. Within this enclosure, the residential tower with a polygonal floor plan of 9 by 15 meters stood isolated. The west wall and parts of the south and north walls are preserved up to a height of 6.8 meters. The elevated entrance is located in the south wall. The masonry makes an astonishingly homogeneous impression and consists of small ashlar blocks from the Salian period.
