Stolzenburg Castle
The Stolzenburg is the remnant of a hilltop castle at 315 m above sea level in the North Palatinate near the municipality of Bayerfeld-Steckweiler in the Donnersberg district in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The first documented mention of the castle dates from 1256. The builder of the castle was probably Raugraf Konrad III from the Stolzenburg line. As a result of the Dhaun Feud over the Schmidtburg, the Dhaun Wildgraf occupied the Stolzenburg for a short time. Already in 1358, the Stolzenburg line of the Raugrafen died out. The Lords of Bolanden appeared as heirs. In the following period, more and more counts and lords became co-owners of the castle. For example, the Counts of Veldenz, Counts of Leiningen and Counts of Sponheim. In 1367, the Palatine Counts became co-owners through purchase. The division into various ownership shares finally led to the destruction of the castle in 1471 by Palatine Count Friedrich I in the fight against Ludwig of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
Layout+
The remains of the castle lie under forest, about 50 meters northwest of the Stolzenberger Hof. The area is located on the edge of the escarpment to the valley on a rocky outcrop and has an extent of approx. 50 by 80 meters. It is separated from the rest of the mountain ridge by a section ditch to the south and north respectively. Hardly any wall remains are preserved.
