Old Castle Scheiden

The remains of the castle can be visited

The Old Castle (Altes Schloss) is the ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle near Scheiden, a district of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland.

The remains of the walls of the historically unidentifiable castle complex are found on the Adelsköpfchen, about 1/2 km east of the village center of Scheiden. A clear distinction can be made between an upper castle on the edge of a high plateau, protected against it by a ditch, and a larger lower castle, located about 10 m lower, on a projecting mountain terrace. The upper castle is approximately rectangular and had a stronger shield wall against the attack side. In the lower castle, at the southernmost tip, there are the remains of a slightly higher rectangular building and traces of a surrounding wall with a gate on the east side.

There are no documentary records for the castle site (the name Altes Schloss is post-medieval). However, based on its layout and wall remains, it can be dated to the 12th or 13th century.
