Rippberg Castle

History+
Rietberg Castle was built around 1300 by the Lords of Dürn. Afterwards, the first farmers settled around the castle. Throughout the late Middle Ages, the place was owned by the ministerial family of Dürn and was a Würzburg fief. Around 1590, it reverted to Würzburg, which enfeoffed the Echter von Mespelbrunn family with the lordship. They converted the castle, located in the valley, into a palace between 1591 and 1594. In 1835, the palace was demolished. Only the gate tower from the 15th century (coats of arms of Adelsheim and Rüdt, then local lords) remained.
