Jagstberg Castle

The castle ruin Jagstberg, also called Jagstburg, is a vanished hill castle at 350 m above sea level in today's district Jagstberg of the municipality Mulfingen in the Hohenlohe district (Baden-Württemberg).

The castle is located between the rectory and the schoolhouse of the high medieval castle hamlet on the north-western spur of a small left tributary of the Jagst through the Rote Klinge, about 90 m above the river and the namesake main town of the municipality on the opposite bank.

The castle was mentioned in 1228 as Jagesperch. It was built by the Lords of Jagstberg, who, according to their coat of arms, were related by lineage to the Lords of Langenburg. Possibly their lineage was a side branch of the Lords of Mulfingen, who later also named themselves after Ebersberg near Backnang. In 1275, Albert von Ebersberg enfeoffed the castle to the Bishop of Würzburg, who in turn enfeoffed a part of it to the Lords of Hohenlohe-Brauneck.

In 1782, the castle was demolished due to lack of water, with the exception of the massive, square, 84-foot-high keep standing in the southwest corner, which initially resisted all demolition attempts. On June 10, 1822, it was filled with dry wood, set on fire, and blown up by the immense heat. Part of the debris fell onto the castle remains, another part destroyed the community's sheep house, which was rebuilt the following year. Today, only minor wall remains bear witness to the former castle complex.
