Heidenburg Castle

The site consisted of an oval ringfort, which has a circumference of 310 m and extends 140 m in west-east and 50 m in north-south direction. Its area, rising to the west, is approximately 5700 m². An approximately square residential tower was erected within. Of this and the ringfort itself, only a few remains and traces in the terrain are still visible; remnants of further dwellings can at best be guessed. At the western gate of the complex, located 323 m high towards the Weinbiet summit, half-meter-high dry stone wall remains of a "gate alley" and foundation stones of the gate are still recognizable. Since the Gimmeldingen quarry was later operated in the immediate vicinity, components of the ringfort were also "mined" in the past.

The cultural monument presumably dates from the 9th/10th century, i.e., from the Carolingian period, and was allegedly built in 843 under Louis the German. The complex served as a refuge castle, as the hilltop offered a wide view out into the Rhine plain, which lies up to 200 m lower.

Whether the Heidenburg ended through destruction or decay is not known. It very soon fell into oblivion. It received its name because its origin was falsely attributed to the Celts, considered pagan, who inhabited the area in the 1st millennium BC.
