Bühringen Castle

Bühringen Castle, also known as Überkingen Castle, is a vanished spur castle on a 701 m above sea level high rock spur of the Burghalde above the confluence of the Rötelbach into the Fils not far from the municipality of Bad Überkingen in the Göppingen district in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was built around 1250 by the Counts of Helfenstein and was the seat of their ministerials. They are first mentioned in a document in 1258 with the knights Albrecht, Ulrich, and Heinrich von Überkingen. In 1363, Hans von Obenhausen sold, among other things, Überkingen Castle to Count Ulrich von Helfenstein. It later became the retirement residence of Countess Maria von Helfenstein, Duchess of Bosnia, the widow of Count Ulrich von Helfenstein, and after her death in 1405, it was sold to the Imperial City of Ulm, which occupied it with a Vogt. During the Peasants' War, the castle was burned down in 1525 and subsequently almost completely dismantled by citizens of Türkheim.
