Zug Castle

The beginnings of Zug Castle can be traced back to the 11th century, when a wooden complex on this site was replaced by a stone curtain wall. This early fortification was destroyed in the 12th century. During the subsequent reconstruction, the tower still visible today and a new curtain wall were erected. Originally built by ministerials of the Counts of Lenzburg, the estate came into the possession of the Counts of Kyburg in the 13th century, who developed it into a castle. After the extinction of the Kyburgers in 1273, the Counts of Habsburg acquired the rights to the castle. Following Zug's accession to the Swiss Confederacy in 1352, the castle passed into private ownership and served as a distinguished residence for various Zug families over the centuries. In 1555, Johannes Zurlauben, one of the owners at the time, added the half-timbered structure, still recognizable today, on the former shield wall.

Zug Castle is located in the city of Zug in the canton of Zug, Switzerland, nestled within the newer old town inside the second city wall. It sits at an elevation of approximately 430 m above sea level.

Following extensive restoration from 1979 to 1982, Zug Castle now serves as a cultural history museum for the city and canton of Zug, making it accessible to visitors.
