Wittlage Castle
Wittlage Castle is a castle in the Wittlage district (Burgstraße 5) of the municipality of Bad Essen in the Osnabrück district in Lower Saxony.
Wittlage Castle was commissioned in 1309 by Bishop Engelbert II of Osnabrück as a collegiate castle to secure the northeastern state border against Ravensberg, Minden, and Diepholz.
Occupied and plundered multiple times during the Thirty Years' War, the castle became the administrative seat of the bailiff from 1716 and later the official seat of the Wittlage district.
The preserved buildings of the castle now serve the Heilpädagogische Hilfe Osnabrück as a short-term care facility as well as a conference and guest house.
Description+
The center of the castle was the preserved 32-meter-high, seven-story castle tower, towering over the other buildings, with a wall thickness of 3.5 meters. The 40 by 58-meter inner castle, surrounded by a moat still visible today, was reached via a bridge with an archway.
The outer castle has a total circumference of 625 meters and is surrounded by the large, still water-filled so-called "Amtsgraben" (official moat).
