Wincheringen Castle

Wincheringen Castle, also known as Warsberg Castle or Warsberghaus, is the ruin of a former moated castle at 240 m above sea level in the center of the municipality of Wincheringen in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The moated castle was built in the 14th century by the Lords of Wincheringen and mentioned in 1333. Already in the 10th to 12th century, a family of Wincheringen was mentioned with Folmarus de Winchern in the property register of Mettlach Abbey. In 1357, the Electoral Trier castle was granted as a fief to the Barons of Warsberg and remained in their possession until the end of the 18th century. In the 15th century, the keep was built, in the 16th century the manor house, in 1830 the bells of the parish church of St. Peter were placed in the keep, and in 1850 extensive reconstruction measures took place, which significantly altered the original condition.

During the Second World War, the defensive tower was destroyed and rebuilt. Since 1975, the Warsberghaus, together with the defensive tower, has been owned by the local community of Wincheringen.

The 17-meter-high defensive tower (keep) from the 15th century with a three-sided projecting stair tower and Renaissance portal still serves today as a bell tower and is the landmark of the local community of Wincheringen. The three-story manor house from the 16th century in the Renaissance style serves today as a community office and event hall.
