Wesenberg Castle

Of the original complex, only the keep (Fangelturm) and an adjoining remnant of the curtain wall remain.

Prince Nikolaus von Werle had the castle built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the town of "Wesenberge".

During the Mecklenburg-Brandenburg disputes (Margrave Wars), the castle was in changing possession from 1276 onwards.

From 1329, the Mecklenburg rulers received the Stargard region as a fief. In 1352, Mecklenburg-Stargard became an independent duchy under Johann von Mecklenburg. At times, the castle served as a residence for the widow of Duke Ulrich II. After 1500, Wesenberg Castle became a princely office.

The Thirty Years' War resulted in extensive destruction of the castle complex; only the torso of the keep – also known as the Fangelturm – and parts of the castle wall in the south remained. Around 1660, the "Great House" of the castle was described as uninhabitable, and around 1677, it was called completely dilapidated.

In 1752, the castle grounds passed to the ducal chamber, and in 1812, a Schulze was appointed as administrator. The original residential building was replaced by a simple structure. This building was destroyed twice by fire and rebuilt. After 1950, the building was used by the forest administration.

The castle is now owned by the town. The Wesenberg tourist office is located there, and a collection on fishing, forestry, and regional history is displayed in the local history room. In addition, a castle association was founded in Wesenberg in 1994.
