The origins of Oybin Monastery date back to the second half of the 14th century. Its establishment or first mention as a monastery is documented for the years 1366/1369. Emperor Charles IV played a decisive role in the settlement of the Celestines on Oybin. The monastery church, built between 1366 and 1384, was consecrated, among others, to the Virgin Mary, Saint Wenceslas, and Saint Peter. Throughout its history, the monastery withstood sieges by the Hussites in the 15th century but also experienced fires and extensive construction, including the creation of a cemetery around 1512 to 1515. The Reformation ultimately led to the dissolution of the monastery in 1559, when the last monk left the premises. After a devastating fire in 1577 and a major rockfall in 1682, the complex increasingly fell into disrepair and was partially used as a quarry.

The Oybin Castle and Monastery Ruin is located on Oybin Mountain in the Zittau Mountains, near the city of Görlitz in Saxony, Germany.

Today, the complex presents itself as a ruin, though its remains have been extensively secured and made accessible. A museum, built before 1906 in place of a former powder house, offers visitors insights into the history of the site. The ruin is a protected cultural monument in Saxony.
