Trenčín Castle, also known as Trentschin Castle, is a prominent historical structure in northwestern Slovakia. Built on a steep rock, it shapes the cityscape of Trenčín and bears witness to a rich past as a royal fortress and county seat.

History+

The origins of Trenčín Castle date back to the 11th century when it was established as a royal complex, around which the city developed. In the 13th century, the central, 39-meter-high Matthew's Tower was rebuilt. The castle played a crucial role when Matthew Csák acquired it in 1302, controlling large parts of western and central Slovakia from there until 1321. After his death, it reverted to the crown. In 1335, the Treaty of Trentschin was signed here, regulating Poland's claims to Silesian duchies. King Sigismund of Luxembourg later had the Barbara Palace built for his consort. In 1600, the castle passed into the possession of the Illésházy family. After being used as a barracks in the 18th century, the complex was severely damaged by a fire in 1790. Extensive renovation work only began in 1956 and continues to this day.
