Torpa Castle

Torpa Castle, also known as Torpa stenhus, is an outstanding example of medieval architecture in Sweden. Located in Länghem, Tranemo municipality, on the shores of Lake Åsunden, it is one of the best-preserved castles in the country and fascinates visitors with its rich history and well-preserved architecture.
History+
Although mentioned in historical records as early as the late 14th century, Torpa was not officially documented as a manor until 1481. At that time, the Privy Councillor Arvid Knutsson resided there, who likely had the stone castle built around 1500 as a defensive structure against the Danes. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent various alterations. Notably, Katharina Stenbock, the third wife of Gustav Vasa, hailed from Torpa.

Particularly noteworthy are the well-preserved Knights' Hall with its original furnishings and the Baroque castle chapel. On the fourth floor, traces of a bricked-up staircase to a possible fifth floor or a defensive passage have also been discovered. The first two floors each house two vaulted rooms of different sizes, while the third and fourth floors each comprise a single large room, with the fourth floor having the most windows.
