Tittmoning Castle

Tittmoning Castle is a castle on a prominent conical hill at about 388 m above sea level, located south above the old town of Tittmoning, Mühlenstraße, in the district of Traunstein in Bavaria.

The presumed construction of the hilltop castle in the 12th to 13th century by the local nobility, the knightly family of the Lords of Titmoningen, is uncertain.

The castle was first mentioned in a document when it was acquired by the Archdiocese of Salzburg (Archbishop Eberhard II) as a border fortification against Bavaria. In 1324, the castle was captured by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian during the feud against Frederick the Fair of Habsburg and sold back to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1327.

In the second half of the 15th century, the castle was expanded into a fortress in late Gothic style, and a granary (Traidkasten) was probably built under Archbishop Ernst. In 1611, the castle, damaged by Bavarian troops, was handed over to Duke Maximilian I and sold back to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1614. From 1614 to 1621, the castle was converted into a hunting lodge. From 1690 to 1694, the castle chapel St. Michael was baroqueized. In 1805, the castle burned down under French occupation, destroying, among other things, the keep.

After its gradual decay, the city of Tittmoning bought the castle in 1852.
