Straßberg Castle
Straßberg Castle is a spur castle on the high Schlossberg of the municipality of Straßberg in the Zollernalb district in Baden-Württemberg.
Around 1150, a feudal castle was built on this strategically located site, which lies directly on the Swabian Alb ascent of the old Roman road Sulz - Laiz. This castle is no longer identical to the present complex. From the middle of the 13th century, the castle was expanded to the complex preserved today.
Former owners include the Lords of Westerstetten from 1532 to 1625, who in 1597 transformed the castle into a mountain palace with the highest possible living comfort.
Architectural Description+
The compact castle complex includes a pentagonal residential and defensive tower built of ashlar blocks, a palas as a central building with a half-timbered superstructure, and a gatehouse bordering the neck ditch, which is partly hewn into the rock. Remains of the walls that surrounded the castle's forecourt are still preserved. The castle is privately owned and inhabited.
