Steyersberg Castle

Steyersberg was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century by relatives of the Schenken von Haßbach, who resided in the neighborhood. A document from 1266 mentions a Reinboto de Stigesperig and another from 1278 a Gundacherus de Steisperch. The latter was probably inherited by Ulrich der Esel from Kranichberg, who called himself von Steyersberg from 1296.

The castle remained in the possession of the Kranichbergers for 90 years. In 1386, it came into the possession of Friedrich von Stubenberg through marriage. Over the next 200 years, several branches of the Stubenberg family alternated in its ownership. Finally, in 1600, Georg Hartmann von Stubenberg sold his property to Ehrenreich von Wurmbrand zu Stuppach.

He had extensive structural changes made to the castle. He and his successors converted the castle into a habitable Renaissance palace and had it refortified. In 1705, an inheritance division occurred, in which the entailed estate of Steyersberg fell to Casimir Heinrich and Christoph von Wurmbrand. For some years, the castle was leased to Count Nikolaus Stella. After Casimir's death, Johann Wilhelm von Wurmbrand inherited the property. After 1791, Steyersberg was leased again, which proved unfavorable due to poor management. The year 1848 finally brought the abolition of the Steyersberg dominion. The castle itself, however, remained in the possession of the Counts of Wurmbrand and is still in very good condition today.
