Schwebda Castle
The moated castle Schwebda is located in the district Schwebda of the North Hessian municipality Meinhard in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis. It lies at an altitude of about 159 meters in the Lindenanger of Schwebda and was connected to the Werra by its former moat.
The construction of the moated castle probably falls between 1243 and 1269, according to documentary mentions of the Knights of Schwebda. They pledged their property to the Lords of Bilstein as a fief in 1297. After the extinction of the Bilsteiners, the castle demonstrably passed to the Landgraves of Hesse in 1301.
In the 16th century, the castle was demolished and the "Stone House" with a latrine bay was built from the older parts of the building, which is still preserved today and is privately owned.
