Rindern Castle

Wasserburg Rindern is a former manor house in the village of Rindern, which belongs to the city of Kleve. Since 1956, Wasserburg Rindern has served as the seat of the "Catholic Residential Adult Education Center Wasserburg Rindern".

Wasserburg Rindern was built in 1654 as Gut op gen Poll by the married couple Herman Hecking and G. Ranwick. In 1666, the Great Elector of Brandenburg acquired the estate as a hunting lodge. Under his governor Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen, it was incorporated into the Kleve Gardens. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Wasserburg was probably redesigned for the first time. Another renovation took place in 1851, during which only some sandstone ornaments of the original facade design remained.

After the Second World War, the district of Kleve initially acquired the property and had the worst damage repaired, without having a specific use in mind. In 1954, the Wasserburg was sold to the Diocese of Münster, which relocated the rural adult education center from Freudenberg near Kleve here in 1956. During the preceding renovations, a second transverse wing was added to the building, giving the facade a symmetrical appearance. However, the roof turret and the two-flight entrance staircase were unnecessarily removed, significantly impairing the appearance of the complex. In the following years, an extension wing was added to the rear of the old Wasserburg, and a freestanding chapel was built between 1966 and 1968. By 1974, the residential adult education center was expanded with a large new building, and by 2004, the entire complex was thoroughly renovated and a new reception, kitchen, and room wing were added.
