Raeren Castle

The Raeren Castle is a moated castle in the Belgian city Raeren near the border to Germany.

Initially there was the castle of only a nearly square tower house with two floors, the building in the middle of the 14th Century dated. As a builder Jean d'Alensberg is suspected, but what could not yet be proven. The castle was first mentioned in 1425th.

First owner was 1426 Johann van den Roideren, on which the old name of the castle "zen Roideren" goes back. About the families of Nechtersheim of Kaldenbach and of Belven the castle came in 1552 to Johann of Lomont. By a fire on 20 September 1856 burned all agricultural buildings from the castle down to the ground, but was subsequently rebuilt.

After the community Raeren had purchased the castle in 1960, she taught there a pottery museum in. Another fire in 1982 destroyed valuable parts of the old buildings, which are then elaborately restored was because Raeren Castle in 1952 as the first eastbelgisches house under monument protection had been provided.
