Osterspai Castle

Of the castle, located directly on the banks of the Rhine and originally surrounded by a moat, only the massive residential tower and the chapel remain. In early 1900, the tower was extended with a half-timbered annex.

The castle, presumably built in the first half or middle of the 14th century, was first documented around 1400. In 1434, Philipp von Liebenstein received the promise from the co-heirs of Liebenstein for the sole use of the village and Osterspai Castle. Of the residential tower ("Alte Burg") built in the mid-14th century, remnants of the corner towers can still be seen.

In 1636, the Barons von Waldenburg, known as Schenker, and in 1792, the Imperial Barons von Preuschen von und zu Liebenstein took over the local rule in Osterspai. In 1673, the castle with its buildings was still intact. However, only the massive residential tower with the half-timbered building added in early 1900 remains. The castle is still the family seat of the Barons and Baronesses von Preuschen. The large castle area is used as a vineyard.

The chapel is said to date from the 13th century and was donated to Eberbach Abbey in 1236. It was originally dedicated to St. Peter and is now called St. James's Chapel. It is a two-story, rectangular hall building, with remnants of 13th-century wall paintings in the upper story, which refer to the artistic environment of Limburg Cathedral.
