Örebro Castle

The first mentions of a royal estate in Örebro date back to 1347. Around 1350, King Magnus Eriksson had the original U-shaped castle built, which was connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. Over the centuries, the castle frequently changed hands, including Count Albrecht of Mecklenburg (1364), Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson (1434), and later also Danish and Swedish kings such as Kristian II and Gustav Vasa after a siege in 1521. Duke Charles, later Charles IX, inherited the castle and began an extensive renovation in the style of a Renaissance castle in 1573. Between 1602 and 1617, the castle served as the venue for seven parliamentary sessions under his and King Gustav II Adolf's leadership. After the completion of the renovations by Queen Christina of Holstein-Gottorp in 1625, the castle gradually fell into disrepair and was uninhabited. A tower collapsed in the early 18th century. From 1750 onwards, renovations were carried out, during which the towers were reduced and the castle was rebuilt in a classical style. After its completion, it served as the residence of the Governor of Örebro.
