Oebisfelde Castle
Oebisfelde Castle, also known as Oebisfelde Marsh Castle, is a former moated castle in Oebisfelde-Weferlingen in the Börde district of Saxony-Anhalt. Oebisfelde Castle is one of the oldest surviving marsh castles in Europe.
The castle was probably built in the 10th century to protect the Aller crossing on a sandbank of the Aller in the marshland of the Drömling. Between 1014 and 1073, the town and castle were first mentioned as Ysfelde in a deed of gift. In 1226, the town "Ovesfelde" and the castle were first mentioned under Wolbertus de Ousfelde. A further mention of the castle as castrum took place in 1263. Around 1300, the castle was incorporated into the medieval town layout. In the Schmalkaldic War of 1547, the castle and the town were devastated several times. In 1710, the ramparts around the castle complex were leveled. The former keep was used as a water tower for several decades after 1938.
Architectural Description+
The castle buildings of the town-edge castle, covering an area of 67 by 80 meters in the shape of an irregular pentagon, and the 27-meter-high square keep, with a base area of 8.25 by 8.25 meters and 2.50-meter-thick foundation walls, are built from quarry stone.
The well-preserved castle courtyard of the core castle is bordered by the freestanding keep, two half-timbered buildings at the entrance, and the rear of the brewhouse, as well as the former cellar-hall barn and the former garden house. The palas in the north of the complex is the most imposing building due to its size. Furthermore, the complex features an elongated outer bailey with a larger castle courtyard and a drawbridge. A chapel was located east of the gate. A road now runs through the former moat, which until 2011 was part of Federal Highway 188.
Current Use+
Today, the castle is used as a tourist information center, local history museum of the Oebisfelde local history association, library, and local and castle museum. The keep is accessible. In recent years, Oebisfelde Castle has developed into the cultural center of the town. Markets are held and concerts take place in the newly designed castle courtyards. Also worth mentioning is the traditional Old Town Festival, which annually attracts many visitors with its medieval spectacle in June.
