Odenhausen Castle (Berkum)

Odenhausen Castle is a castle in Berkum, a district of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district. The castle is a protected monument.

The castle is located above Berkum, and a new development now borders the former outbuildings of the castle. It was originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, the fortification was expanded into a moated castle with an outer and inner bailey. In 1560, under Ludwig von Blankart, it was converted into a Renaissance complex.

Odenhausen Castle is a moated castle in an elevated position, where the still existing moats were fed by springs. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1316 and was for a long time a fief held by the Lords of Odenhausen from the Siegburg Abbey of Michaelsberg.

A bridge leads over the outer moat through a baroque gate into the farmyard, from which another bridge leads over the moat to the two-winged manor house. The portal is adorned with a coat of arms. On the main front, a pavilion-like extension features a two-story bay window with late Gothic tracery, and above the upper row of windows, there is a volute gable on each side.
