Moosham Castle

Moosham Castle belongs to the municipality of Unternberg in Lungau, Salzburg.
First mentioned in 1191, it fell to the Archbishops of Salzburg in 1285. In the 14th century, it became the seat of the regional judges or administrators. Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach had the medieval castle expanded until 1577.
In 1790, the Moosham administrative court was dissolved by Archbishop Colloredo, the last administrator was Johann Wenzel von Helmreich zu Brunfeld, after which the castle fell into increasing disrepair.
In 1886, Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek bought the complex. Previously, from 1874, he had already invested considerable funds in Kreuzenstein Castle. Moosham Castle remains in family ownership to this day. It is publicly accessible and impresses with a rich art collection, which was amassed by the lord of the castle. It includes Roman finds from this area as well as a number of well-preserved documents and torture instruments from the time of the witch trials.
The pianist Cecil Taylor recorded his album Air Above Mountains (Buildings Within) here at a festival in 1976.
The Austrian fairy tale film Rumpelstilzchen from 2007, based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, was produced, among other places, at Moosham Castle in 2005/06 for the "Märchenperlen" film series.
