Markt Castle

Burg Markt, also known as Fuggerschloss, is located above the village of Markt, a district of Biberbach in the Swabian district of Augsburg.

The listed ensemble consists of the Rear (eastern) Castle around the keep and the Front (western) Castle with the Onoldsbach Tower. The spur castle above the Schmutter on the edge of the Lech Valley probably dates from the 14th century and first belonged centrally to the rule of the Rechbergers, then the Pappenheimers. The castle was acquired in 1508 together with the Herrschaft Biberbach by Jakob Fugger and rebuilt as a palace in 1525. Preserved from this are the keep, the wall system and the Onoldsbach Tower. Further parts of the complex include the Catholic castle chapel St. Johannes der Täufer from 1738 to 1739 by Simon Rothmiller with a former chaplain's house and some 19th-century manor buildings.

The western part is used as an equestrian center. The keep was renovated in 2013. The Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James leads past the entrance of the castle to Markt.

At the access road to the castle is Villa Lillefors, built in the 18th-century French style by Carl-Anton Prince Fugger-de Polignac, who has created several themed gardens there.
