Malmö Castle

The origins of Malmöhus date back to 1434, when Eric of Pomerania ordered the construction of an initial defensive structure to protect Malmö's seaside. This fortification, known as Møntergaarden, was a rectangular keep with high walls and a gate tower, where Danish coins were minted. From 1525, Frederick I commissioned the construction of a new castle. The current main building was erected between 1526 and 1530 in the Renaissance style. A fire in 1529 led to further expansions. During the Count's Feud in 1534, Malmö's citizens destroyed parts of the outer defenses. Between 1537 and 1540, the castle was extensively expanded under Christian III, receiving a moat and four large brick corner towers. From 1554 to 1559, Crown Prince Frederick, later Frederick II, resided at Malmöhus. The castle later served as a prison, notably for James Hepburn, the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Carl Gustaf Armfeldt the Younger. From 1828, the entire complex was used as a prison until its closure in 1909, after which it served as an emergency shelter. Following extensive renovation, the first museum moved into Malmöhus in 1937.

Malmöhus Castle is located in the city of Malmö, in the Malmö district of the Skåne region, Sweden, at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, Malmöhus Castle houses the Malmö Art Museum and the City Museum. It has been fully restored and provides an authentic impression of its appearance in the 16th and 17th centuries. The museum complex also includes the Commander's House and a historic Dutch windmill in the adjacent park.
