Lidzbark Warmiński (Heilsberg) Castle

The history of Lidzbark Warmiński Castle begins with the conquest of Heilsberg by the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1241. After the loss of the site during the Second Prussian Uprising between 1260 and 1274, the construction of a fortified castle was decided upon, which was built from 1350 to 1401. In 1350, the Bishop of Warmia moved his seat from Wormditt to Heilsberg. A particularly prominent figure who worked here was Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived at the castle from 1504 to 1510 as the personal physician to his uncle, Bishop Lucas Watzenrode. After the First Partition of Poland in 1795, the castle was abandoned by Ignacy Krasicki and subsequently served various purposes, including as a barracks and later as an orphanage and hospital. The preservation of the complex, which was originally slated for demolition, is largely thanks to Ferdinand von Quast and Karl Hauke. Although the town of Heilsberg was heavily damaged during World War II, the castle remained largely intact.

Lidzbark Warmiński Castle is located in the town of Lidzbark Warmiński (Heilsberg) in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northern Poland, at an elevation of approx. 67 meters above sea level.

Today, the castle houses a regional museum and is accessible to visitors, who can explore the history and architecture of the complex there.
