Langen Castle (Westbevern)

Haus Langen is a former manor house with a water mill in Telgte. It is located southwest of Telgte's Westbevern district at a weir in the Bever river, shortly before its confluence with the Ems.

Haus Langen owes its name to the "noble knights of Langen". The oldest document attests to the feudal lordship of the Bishop of Münster in 1150. It remained in the possession of a family of the same name until 1378, and then passed to the von Letmathe family through an heiress. In 1702, the property fell to Bernhard Engelbert Christian von Beverförde-Werries due to a testamentary provision. His son Friedrich Christian adopted his nephew Friedrich Clemens von Elverfeldt zu Dahlhausen und Steinhausen and made him his heir. Thus, the property came into the possession of the Elverfeldt family, also known as von Beverfoerde zu Werries.

Initially, the water mill belonging to the ensemble was operated as an oil mill; by the end of the 19th century, only grain was milled. The mill remained in operation until the 1960s.

Haus Langen, which is often mistakenly equated with the water mill, is today a popular destination for cyclists and walkers, as the adjacent forest area and the Ems floodplains between the Klatenberge north of Telgte and the Haskenau and the Werse estuary near Fuestrup are closed to through car traffic.
