Krayerhof Castle

Krayer Hof, also known as Krayer Castle, is a moated castle near the Eich district of the city of Andernach in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle is located in the Eich district near the Eich district of Andernach in the direction of Kell.

Of the essentially Romanesque complex, the main building and the courtyard tower have been preserved. It is inhabited, agriculturally managed, and stables boarding horses.

The castle was built in the 11th century by Lambert von Lützing. In 1336, it was owned by Kurköln, then by various nobles. In 1813, the Andernach leather manufacturer Nebel bought the castle, which was then acquired in 1827 by Matthias Hölterhof from Cologne.

In the years 1901/02, the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire temporarily lived at Kray Castle as a private tutor.

Since 1953, the castle has been owned by the Anton Elvert family. The name Elvert comes from the Old French Huguenot era (elle verde; the greens). The family was resettled from Münsterland; more precisely from Hiddingsel. Due to the straightening of the Dortmund-Ems Canal, the old farm had to make way. The name Elvert gave the farming community there its name.
